Patrick McGinnis, President of the Boston and Maine Railroad, asked Breuer to design new trains for his company. The Swiss graphic artist, Herbert Matter, created a blue, black and white logo which Breuer's office used as the basis for the exterior design of the train. Breuer had already designed trains and stations for McGinnis when he was head of the New Haven Railroad.
