In 1953, Breuer designed the Northfield Elementary School in Litchfield, CT. in association with the architectural firm of O'™Connor and Kilham. The commission likely came through his friend and client, Rufus Stillman, who lived in Litchfield. The one-story, flat-roofed, square building contained three classrooms on the northern side. The walls dividing the classrooms protruded past the façade (in a manner similar to the Torin corporation building in Oakville Ontario) as did the roof and side walls. A large multi-purpose room and service rooms made up the rest of the program. Breuer cut a rectangular terrace out of the northern facade and covered it with a pergola. The building eventually became the Montessori School of northwestern Connecticut.
