The Torin Corporation, formerly the Torrington Manufacturing Company, produced air-moving equipment and had its headquarters in Torrington, CT. The Oakville, Ontario building was the first structure Breuer designed for the corporation. The commission came to Breuer through his friend and client, Rufus Stillman, who was the vice-president of the company and later became the chairman of the board. Stillman asked Breuer to design a 12,000-square-foot manufacturing plant of which 80% was devoted to factory processes and 20% to office space. Breuer designed a flexible, open-plan space topped by a flat roof that could easily be expanded. The building was constructed of white-painted brick. Strip windows protected by a solar-glass sunshade ran the length of the entrance façade, which was divided into six bays by projecting piers. A long, low wall of perforated brick extended from the entrance and hid the parking lot from view. Light flooded the manufacturing floor from large window which dominated the rear façade and whose mullions formed an intricate geometric pattern. Breuer would use a variation of this design for many of the nine buildings he designed for the corporation over the course of his career.
