The Museum of Modern Art and "Architectural Forum" sponsored a competition for an art center at Wheaton College in June of 1938. Gropius and Breuer's entry received second place out of 243 entries. Their scheme borrowed forms from Breuer's Garden City of the Future, including the shallow y-shape of the classroom wing, which was connected by a glazed passage to the rest of the complex. A wedge-shaped theater joined parallel arms containing gallery space, an auditorium, library, practice rooms and studios. A curved canopy supported by thin posts marked the entrance to the glass façade of the galleries. Walter Curt Behrendt, the influential architect and writer who served on the jury, stated that the college should not repeat the "errors of the Bauhaus," which might explain why Gropius and Breuer's scheme did not win.
