The Southern New England Telephone Company asked Breuer to design a traffic service positions building on land leased from its neighbor, the Torin Corporation (another Breuer client). Breuer and his partner Hamilton Smith focused the square building around a central landscaped courtyard visible to the building’s inhabitants through floor-to-ceiling glazing. All four exterior facades varied slightly; the east and west elevations featured narrow strips of windows in walls of split-face blocks while the north and south elevations featured larger areas of glazing and cement plaster and ashlar stone in addition to the split-face blocks.
