In 1975 Breuer agreed to produce a conceptual study for hotel and lift station on the south face of Mt. Tochal in Iran. This complex would have been one entry to the new ski area of Shahrestanak. The hotel (drawings of which can be found at the Archives of American Art) consisted of a series of eight projecting and receding rectilinear volumes of equal width. The blocks featured four stories of hotel rooms with recessed balconies and penthouse terraces above, all raised above a pool and a stepped plaza. Like the Whitney Museum of a decade earlier, the buildings cantilevered larger volumes over smaller bases. Correspondence between the partners Robert Gatje and Mario Jossa reveals that they hoped their experience developing the French ski resort in Flaine would position them well for this commission. An internal letter from 1976 indicates that the concept had been approved but was stalled because the client was having trouble getting his partners to provide the necessary funds. This situation was apparently never resolved, as the project was not built.
