Client. Harnischmacher was the President of a company that manufactured shoe-cleaning products. In 1928-29, Breuer remodeled both Harnischmacher's office in Mainz and his apartment in Wiesbaden. The commission came through Gropius. Three years later, he and his wife, Marianne, provided Breuer with his first house commission. The house in Wiesbaden was destroyed during the war and the couple asked Breuer to build them a second house in 1953. The couple remained close friends with Breuer throughout his career.
