In 1938, he and his wife, Hilde, asked Breuer to design a house in Palm Springs, CA. According to the by-laws of the neighborhood, the house had to possess a modern, Spanish exterior. Breuer felt that a well-designed modern house would fit in well with the surrounding Spanish houses and the design was approved. The house was never built, due to the couple's divorce a year later.
