Tange, Kenzo (1913 - 2005)

Japanese architect, urban planner and writer. He received an architecture degree from the University of Tokyo in 1938 and a doctorate in 1959. He taught at the university from 1946 to 1974 and opened his own office Kenzo Tange and Urtec, Urbanists and Architects in 1961. Arata Isozaki, Kisho Kurokawa and Fumihiko Maki numbered among his students. Tange was a key participated in the Metabolist movement, which focused on giant infrastructure systems or ‘megastructures.’ His most famous projects include the National Gymnasia for the Olympic games, the Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima and an infrastructure plan for Tokyo Bay.
