Professional organization for architects. The AIA was founded on February 23, 1857 when 13 architects met in the office of Richard Upjohn. Upjohn would become the first president of the organization which would eventually spread beyond New York to become a national presence with chapters in many other cities. The AIA helped standardize the practice of architecture, through the provision of model contracts and fee schedules, and architectural education and licensing. The highest honor the Institute bestows is the Gold Medal, awarded by the Board of Directors in recognition of distinguished service to the profession or to the Institute. Breuer received the Gold Medal in 1968.
