Dr. Sprinza Weizenblatt commissioned a residence from Gropius and Breuer in 1940. It is possible that she heard about the firm through their designs for the nearby campus of Black Mountain College. Each floor of the duplex residence contained a separate apartment with two bedrooms, combined living and dining rooms, a study, a maid's room and either a terrace or balcony. A stair tower, separated from the main volume of the house, provided access to the apartments. The roof extended beyond the façade, creating a small overhang. Breuer was largely responsible for the design. He utilized a structural system which combined stone and self-supporting redwood walls and was derived from that developed for the ski lodge for Hans Falkner. Anthony Lord, a local architect, supervised construction. Problems arose with the heating system and sound traveling between the apartments, which may explain why the house was rarely published. The issue of "Nuestra Arquitectura" devoted to Breuer's work featured a photograph of this house on its cover.
