Breuer designed this apartment for a woman writer and critic. The main living spaces, the bedroom and the combined living-study-dining room, could be closed off from one another by folding doors or left as a single continuous space. A band of hanging cabinets stretched the length of the apartment, connecting the two rooms visually. Breuer provided tubular-steel furniture, including a bed, and carpeted the apartment with rush matting. Behind the bed, Breuer installed a system of vertical wooden strips, which could be used to hang pictures or photographs and which he had developed for his own apartment in Berlin. The De Francesco apartment was similar in layout to the Boroschek apartment of the following year.
