Projects by Name
In 1927, Breuer designed three variations of a prefabricated metal row house for the young masters of the Bauhaus. The project name was derived from the last names of the faculty members who were to occupy the houses: Breuer, Josef Albers, Hannes Meyer, Herbert Bayer, Otto Meyer-Ottens and Joost Schmidt. Breuer modified his earlier designs for a Small Metal House. A steel skeleton frame supported modular panels of asbestos-cement for walls and interior partitions. The ground floor contained the living room, study, and kitchen, and bedrooms were located on the upper floor, now raised on piloti. The roof of the living room volume served as a terrace. Despite the funds that Gropius raised, the houses were never built.
