In 1951, Breuer sold his first house in New Canaan, CT. and designed a new home for his family. He created a U-shaped, single-story, flat-roofed building in which planar, fieldstone walls alternated with floor-to-ceiling glass. The house surrounded an entrance terrace paved in flagstone. The entrance opened to the master bedroom suite and a free-plan living-dining room in which the spaces were separated by a translucent screen. The living room featured one of Breuer's sculptural fireplaces composed of a rectangular, white-painted brick element topped by a cylindrical flue. The living-dining room opened onto another paved terrace, bounded by a low-stone wall. The children's and guest bedrooms were at the opposite end of the house from the master bedroom. Breuer specified flagstone floors and cypress ceilings for most of the interior spaces, which were furnished with numerous pieces of his own design. He sold the house in 1976. One of his partners, Herbert Beckhard, designed later additions.
