In 1949, Arthur and Edith Hooper asked Breuer to remodel their traditional stone house and to add a modern, three-bedroom addition. Breuer extended a long, two-story rectangle perpendicular to the main house. The long sides of the addition were clad in vertical wooden siding while the narrow end utilized stone fieldstone that matched the main house. This commission would lead to many others, including a new house for the Hoopers, the Grosse Pointe Library funded by Edith's father (Dexter Ferry), the Ferry Cooperative Dormitory at Vassar and the Bryn Mawr School for Girls.
