Breuer developed a pentagonal housing community for a 24-acre slum clearance project in South Boston. Five 12-story apartment buildings that could house 1,000 families formed the outer edges of the complex. The apartments would have balconies on one side and outdoor access corridors protected by louver walls on the other. Breuer placed one-story shops with parking, a community garden and a three-story school in the interior of the pentagon. The school gymnasium and auditorium doubled as community centers. Each complex functioned as its own residential and commercial neighborhood.
