In 1970, Breuer agreed to design a parking garage for the De Bijenkorf Department Store in Rotterdam, a commission completed 13 years earlier. He and one of his partners, Robert Gatje, designed a building with nine levels of parking. Drawings indicate that the architects experimented with numerous ideas for cladding, ranging from a hexagonal pattern that echoed the main façade of the department store to a grid of what appears to be terracotta flue tiles similar to that used in the façade of the classroom and administration building at Hunter College or panels emphasizing the diagonal movement of the interior ramps. A Dutch firm oversaw the construction. Breuer never saw the completed parking garage as he was too ill to travel by the summer of 1974.
