Breuer received an Honorable Mention for his dormitory design for Smith College. He imagined three identical four-story buildings. Each building possessed three distinct volumes accommodating different functions. A long, bent rectangle lined on one side with balconies would house student rooms along with communal spaces and a library, while a six-sided volume and wedge-shaped connector contained storage and public functions such as dining and recreation. The Y- and wedge shapes echo those found in Breuer's Garden City of the Future, designed nearly ten years earlier in 1936. Breuer's drawings were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and in Williamstown, MA.
