In 1953, Breuer designed the Northfield Elementary School in Litchfield, CT. in association with the architectural firm of O'Connor and Kilham. The commission likely came through his friend and client, Rufus Stillman, who lived in Litchfield. The one-story, flat-roofed, square building contained three classrooms on the northern side. The walls dividing the classrooms protruded past the façade (in a manner similar to the Torin corporation building in Oakville Ontario) as did the roof and side walls. A large multi-purpose room and service rooms made up the rest of the program. Breuer cut a rectangular terrace out of the northern facade and covered it with a pergola. The building eventually became the Montessori School of northwestern Connecticut.
