In 1947, Breuer created preliminary designs for a 1,200 square foot house in Greenburgh, NY for Richard Lawnhurst. A butterfly roof covered the rectangular wood-frame house whose garden façade featured a pergola along its entire length that extended to shade a large terrace. The terrace could be accessed from the living-dining room. Bedrooms were clustered at the other end of the house over a subterranean garage. Breuer suggested cost-saving alterations to the design when the client expressed concerns about the estimated cost. The house was never built, but Breuer modified the specifications for his first house in New Canaan, CT.
