In 1953, Vera and George Neumann asked Breuer to design a house in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. Breuer had already designed a New York City showroom for the couple's furnishing and fashion-design company, Scarves by Vera. The simple, rectangular house that Breuer designed for the Neumanns featured contrasting colors, textures and shapes. Breuer's usual stone and floor-to-ceiling glass was combined with cinder block walls painted red and Breuer blue. Curving stone retaining walls followed the terrain delineating the edges of the terraces that wrapped around two facades and the edge of the driveway. The common areas of the house were sandwiched between the master bedroom and the bedrooms for children and grandparents. A paved patio covered by a pergola connected the carport to the main house. Breuer added a pool in 1954, and a pool house two decades later.
