In July of 1956, Breuer began to design a high school for 1,800 students for the city of Torrington, CT. Breuer imagined a sprawling, low-rise building, as he had for the Litchfield High School and Bantam Elementary School. This time, the school was arranged as two, nested trapezoids containing classrooms, with a central volume dedicated to the theater, cafeteria and administration. The gymnasium and industrial arts facilities were located in rectangular volumes that framed the rest of the complex. The structure of the gymnasium was a modification of that designed for Litchfield High School, which featured laminated wood arches and a glass elevation. The project was never built.
