Key features of modern architecture presented problems to contractors unfamiliar with their construction. Breuer struggled with the detailing of roofs in particular and designed roof coping that he believed would keep the edging watertight and prevent pitch drippage. He sent the drawings to the Barrett Division in the hopes that they would market it. They were unable to do so and suggested Breuer approach aluminum companies directly. The roof coping was never widely manufactured, but Breuer used it in many of his own projects.
