In 1949, Paul and Anne Rand commissioned a house in Woodstock, NY. Breuer produced working drawings, but the house was never built. Instead, the Rands built in Harrison, NY. Rand was a graphic designer who created logos for many corporations including IBM, UPS and ABC. At the time, he was Art Director at the William H. Weintraub and Company, which had hired Breuer to renovate their offices. Breuer's initial sketches featured two rectangular volumes set perpendicularly to each other, with some combination of a studio and bedroom above the garage. Construction drawings reveal a large, one-story square block with a free-standing garage connected by a covered walkway. Mr. Rand requested repeated and significant changes to the design. Breuer eventually resigned as architect in order to avoid conflicts over control of the design.
