In November of 1938, the organizers of the Golden Gate International Exposition invited Breuer to display furniture in the Decorative Arts section of the exhibition. Other exhibitors included Alvar Aalto, Richard Neutra and Mies van der Rohe. Breuer designed a stand to display various pieces of Isokon furniture, including the long and short chairs and nesting tables. New Furniture, Inc., a newly founded company that imported and manufactured modern furniture purchased the furniture to be displayed on the condition that the pieces would be returned to them after the exhibition. Breuer's stand was not constructed because the organizers of the exhibition received the plans too late. A local interior designer, Ernst Börn, ended up arranging Breuer's furniture. Breuer's display also included a sculpture by Naum Gabo.
