In January of 1942, the United States Housing Authority approached Breuer about designing a defense housing project in Wethersfield, CT. under the auspices of the Federal Works Agency. Breuer was asked to design 65 units in 33 buildings at an estimated cost of $4,879 per unit. He planned to use prefabricated construction at Wethersfield and had requested a copy of the Federal Works Agency's "Standards for Demountable Houses." Joachim Driller asserts that Breuer developed a variation of the Yankee Portables with a butterfly roof to be used for this housing complex, but the project was halted by the government before plans could be finalized.
