The Sisters of Divine Providence consulted Breuer on the design of their new convent after rejecting designs by two Swiss architects. Breuer received the contract in 1967 and the complex was completed in 1972. Breuer, with his partners Robert Gatje and Mario Jossa, organized the various programmatic elements around the daily schedule of the sisters, making sure that the sisters were cloistered from the outside world but still had views of the landscape. The low-lying complex of concrete and fieldstone contained residential spaces along with areas for study, work, and recreation in the wings framing four cloistered courtyards. The chapel with its angled window panels and the dining hall formed the center of the complex. A structure similar to the bell tower for the Annunciation Priory, but containing a cross rather than bells, marked the entrance to convent’s land.
