Projects by Name
Little information exists about this unbuilt project for an arts center for Cardinal Stritch College, although it is likely that Breuer’s work for other Catholic institutions [St. John’s Abbey and University and the Annunciation Priory of the Sisters of St. Benedict] led directly to this commission. The project bears some resemblance to an earlier unbuilt art center for Wheaton College that Breuer and Walter Gropius designed during their partnership. The Tri-Arts Center would have consisted of three connected volumes culminating in the trapezoidal form of the theater. Visitors were to enter the building through a curved, centrally placed connecting passageway. Studios and other facilities for art students and faculty were found in the northern-most building. To the south of the connecting passageway, the theater was nestled between wings containing rehearsal areas, music studios and classroom and library spaces for the music department.
