In 1963, Breuer’s office designed a clubhouse for Purchase Hills Realty Company. Francis J. Duane designed the accompanying golf course. The low-lying windowless entrance façade was to be constructed out of fieldstone. Thin wooden posts placed in front of the fieldstone divided the façade into regular bays. These same wooden posts arranged at the same interval created an open portico on the northern elevation connecting the clubhouse to the golf course. A low retaining wall to the west concealed the swimming pool and a terrace for dancing. The main floor of the building housed a lounge, the main dining room and kitchen, a men’s grille, and the boardroom and business office of the club. The lower floor contained men’s and women’s locker rooms, a nap room, mechanical equipment and a men’s card room. The design never progressed beyond the presentation drawing stage as the club ultimately was not built.
