The Torin Corporation, formerly the Torrington Manufacturing Company, produced air-moving equipment. In 1965, Breuer and his associate Herbert Beckhard began to design a second building for the Torin Corporation campus in Torrington, CT. The architects set the building into a hill, placing the office space above ground and the data processing area below grade. Breuer differentiated the floors visually as well as programmatically. Deeply recessed, faceted precast panels with central projections that served as sunshades and contained mechanical equipment characterized the upper floor. The rear elevation of the lower floor featured a horizontal line of square windows interrupted by brick piers. The same brick appeared at the corners of the upper floor and framed the rear elevation in triangular retaining walls. A large concrete T created from precast panels like those on the building served as the company’s sign and corporate symbol. Between 1952 and 1976, Breuer’s firm designed numerous other projects for the Torin Corporation.
