In 1956, New York University hired Marcel Breuer and Associates to design a series of buildings for the School of Engineering and Science on its Bronx campus. Breuer’s firm completed five buildings between 1959 and 1970, including a residence hall and student center, a lecture hall called Begrisch Hall, and research facilities in Technology I and II. The site overlooked the Harlem River and featured existing neo-classical buildings by Stanford White. Breuer hoped to construct a further three buildings for the final phase of the comprehensive plan, but the client’s financial difficulties eventually led to the sale of the campus to the City of New York in 1973. Today, the buildings house the Bronx Community College.
