In 1956, New York University hired Marcel Breuer and Associates to design a series of buildings for the School of Engineering and Science on its Bronx campus. The site overlooked the Harlem River and featured existing neo-classical buildings by Stanford White. The Student Center was built during the same years as Begrisch Hall, the laboratory building known as Technology I, and the Residence Hall. Breuer and his associate Robert Gatje designed the Student Center so that it connected to the Residence Hall through two covered bridges accessed from the lounge. The architects located the kitchen and dining room below grade, but because of the site’s natural grade change, the dining room windows overlooked the river. Terraces on the roof of the kitchen and dining room connected the student center to the rest of campus.
