In December of 1972 Modern Master Tapestries approached Breuer hoping he would design some maquettes for tapestries, joining the ranks of Picasso, Miró, Léger and Arp who had already produced designs for the company. Breuer agreed to design three tapestries: “Scarlet,” “Blue Eyes,” and “Balance.” “Balance,” shown in the image to the left, was typical of the designs with its emphasis on geometric forms and reliance on Breuer’s standard palette of colors. One of the tapestries was included in the Metropolitan Museum of Art retrospective of Breuer’s work. In 1975, Breuer also designed a custom tapestry for the Conference Room of the American Press Institute (API). Entitled “ABC-XYZ, ” the tapestry was woven by native craftsmen in India (for Modern Master Tapestries) and donated to API by Robert Brown.
