ALCOA (1888)

The Pittsburgh Reduction Company was founded in 1888. It changed its name to the Aluminum Company of America in 1907, and the name was officially shortened to ALCOA in 1999. ALCOA is one of the world's largest producers of aluminum and aluminum products. Aluminum City Terrace, the defense housing project designed by Gropius and Breuer in 1941, was originally intended to house workers from ALCOA aluminum factories, but the factory moved from New Kensington before the project opened. In the late 1950s, Breuer's office produced designs for an aluminum desk and chairs for the company.
