Architectural League of New York (1881)

Non-profit organization dedicated to programs, lectures and exhibitions on contemporary architecture. The League was founded on January 18, 1881 by a group of young architects led by Cass Gilbert. The League held annual exhibitions between 1886 and 1938 that showcased the best new work in architecture, sculpture, painting, crafts and landscape design and received national attention. Breuer became a member of the League in 1946. A year later, Max Abramovitz invited Breuer to serve on the organization's Current Work Committee. In 1950, Breuer gave a lecture entitled "Must Architecture be Sterile?" to the League's members.
