Elementary School for 480 Children, Competition

Breuer and Yorke entered a 1936 competition to design a large urban elementary school for 480 students in classes of 30. Breuer and York designed a long, curved arc containing the classrooms from which a two-story wedge shaped hall projected at the center of the convex side. A blocky, stepped gymnasium building was located opposite the hall. Covered walkways extended from the gymnasium building to the classroom building, connecting near the ends of the arc. All of the classrooms had good light exposure and access to the outdoors. The movable furniture and flexible spaces meant that rooms could accommodate multiple functions. In many ways, the school foreshadowed suburban school designs of the 1950s. Despite the fact that they did not win the competition, Breuer and Yorke's proposal was illustrated in the March 15, 1937 issue of "Architect's Journal."
