Elevation Study

In 1952, Marion and Joy Levy asked Breuer to design a house for them in Princeton, NJ. The couple requested that there be sufficient wall space and light for the display of their art collection within the house. Breuer designed a two-level house set into a hillside. A flagstone walkway led from the carport to an entry way. The lower story was constructed of cinder blocks and contained the heating equipment and storage. One of Breuer's signature steel-railed, floating-tread staircases led up to the main floor and could be viewed through floor-to-ceiling plate glass windows. The upper story was clad in vertical cypress siding, and featured strip windows on the west elevation and floor-to-ceiling glass on the east. Bedrooms flanked the main living spaces in the center of the rectangular plan. The master bedroom and study were cantilevered beyond the lower level and supported on lally columns. A flagstone-paved terrace could be accessed from the open plan-living-dining room. Breuer added a third bedroom in the spring of 1956.
