In the mid-1960s, Marcel Breuer and his associate Herbert Beckhard created drawings for an Episcopal Church in Fairport, New York. Had it been built, the church would have been Breuer’s only Protestant religious commission. The main sanctuary was illuminated by skylights and a few projecting concrete windows emerging from the otherwise sheer, canted walls faced in unpainted stucco. Another faceted projection framed the entrance to the church. Breuer partially submerged the lower floor containing the parish hall, classrooms, office and other support spaces into the sloping site.
